Turntide selected for £17-million UK axial flux motor scale-up

Turntide Technologies has been selected for UK government grant funding to scale up production of its axial flux electric motors. The award supports Project SUPREME, a £17-million matched-funded program that will automate key steps in the company’s motor manufacturing in North East England.

Project SUPREME runs for 18 months, through January 2028. Turntide will automate labor-intensive steps in axial flux motor production, including winding and tooling components, and validate motors for volume manufacture. The company says it will also register and deliver new intellectual property in the program’s early stages.

Axial flux motors are more compact and lighter than conventional radial flux designs and can deliver more power from a given size. Those advantages have long been offset by manufacturing that is more difficult and expensive at scale, which Turntide says has limited broader adoption. Automating the labor-intensive steps is intended to close that gap and let the company serve more vehicle and equipment makers across a wider range of volumes.

As part of the project, Turntide will expand its Gateshead production and R&D campus and reestablish a component and validation facility in Cramlington, Northumberland.
