BorgWarner has secured an extension of multiple high-volume high-voltage inverter programs with a major European OEM, covering updated inverter designs for both plug-in hybrid and 800 V battery-electric vehicle applications. The extensions build on an existing power electronics partnership between the two companies, and start of production is planned for 2029.
The deal follows BorgWarner’s February announcement of an 800 V integrated drive module and dual-inverter generator for a North American OEM’s plug-in hybrid trucks.
For plug-in hybrid applications, BorgWarner will supply an updated high-voltage inverter built on the company’s proprietary Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) technology, which it describes as already proven in its 800 V inverter portfolio. The design is fully compatible with the customer’s new vehicle operating system, according to BorgWarner.
For 800 V battery-electric applications, BorgWarner’s traction inverter uses a new generation of the company’s proprietary Viper silicon carbide (SiC) power switches and a dual-sided-cooled power module. Silicon carbide switches conduct with lower losses than silicon and tolerate higher junction temperatures. Dual-side cooling removes heat from both faces of the power module rather than one. BorgWarner says the design combines efficiency with cost competitiveness.
