Lumafield has rolled out a new in-line arrayed X-ray system that enables manufacturers to inspect every part moving down a production line rather than a sampled few. The system is designed to drop into existing conveyor lines and to scan at full line speed, flagging defective units and letting good parts through without slowing the flow. Applications include electronics, automotive parts, batteries and consumer goods.
The new system, called Mars, runs at speeds up to 2.5 feet per second and comes in both 2D and 2.5D arrayed configurations. Its X-ray sources and detectors can be arranged to match how parts sit on the line and the specific regions a team needs to inspect. The multilinear 2.5D architecture captures depth information in a single pass, which Lumafield says gives clearer visibility of defects in harder applications. Configurable sorting and rejection options control how flagged parts are handled downstream.
Each scan feeds Lumafield’s cloud software rather than producing a standalone pass/fail result. Mars tracks how part features are distributed across production runs and, according to the company, surfaces process drift before it becomes a yield problem. Lumafield says the data grows more useful as it accumulates across runs, shifts and sites.
Mars can scan products through their packaging to separate defective units from valid ones before a seal is broken. Batches that need a closer look can be routed to Lumafield’s Triton Performance system for full 3D CT scanning, which confirms whether parts are truly defective and characterizes failure modes without scrapping units that would have passed. The company’s Voyager platform consolidates data from each stage into a single view for quality and operations teams.
Conventional in-line X-ray has long been used to catch obvious defects, but Lumafield says its usefulness has been held back by the software behind it. On automotive lines, the company says, scaling visual inspection is costly and still misses internal defects that can hide in injection-molded parts and assemblies.
“In-line X-ray inspection has existed for decades, but these systems have always been limited by the intelligence of their software. Mars uses AI to solve quality issues that were previously impossible to address with automated X-ray inspection,” said Andreas Bastian, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Lumafield. “Now every unit that moves through the line generates information that feeds back into how the process is run and how quality decisions get made across the entire organization.”
