Coulomb Solutions’ mobile battery storage systems qualify for California CORE vouchers

Coulomb Solutions (CSI) has won California Air Resources Board (CARB) approval for three more of its mobile battery energy storage systems under the Clean Off-Road Equipment (CORE) Voucher Program. CORE offsets the upfront cost of commercially available zero-emission off-road equipment through a point-of-sale discount.

The three systems are rated at 233 kWh, 466 kWh and 699 kWh, and all are 480 V AC mobile power units built around lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. Voucher amounts run to $93,000 for the eBESS233-233-01, $185,000 for the eBESS466-466-01 and $280,000 for the eBESS699-540-01. CSI says buyers may receive up to $400 per kWh. Its previously approved 2.3 MWh unit, the eBESS2.3-1.0-01, qualifies for the program’s maximum incentive of $300,000.

CSI sources its LFP batteries from CATL. The company says the packs are vehicle-rated and designed for daily transport. Each unit is a stand-alone, self-contained system that can remain on its trailer or be deployed at a temporary site and relocated later. Onboard telematics collect and transmit location, cumulative operating hours, total energy used in kWh and average energy discharge rate. The systems use integrated thermal management, and CSI says they are designed to meet UL 9540 requirements and comply with NFPA 855.

Because a mobile BESS recharges slowly from an existing grid connection and discharges at higher power on demand, it can enable the deployment of DC fast charging without a service upgrade, and it can cap the peak demand metered by the utility.

CSI says the units are intended for operations that lack EV charging infrastructure, including port cargo-handling , airport ground support equipment, construction and industrial warehouses. They can also smooth grid load and reduce demand charges at high-EV-use locations, supply temporary power at concerts and sporting events, and replace diesel generators for emergency backup during disaster relief. CSI says the units can charge commercial EVs as well as off-road, industrial, construction, rail and marine equipment.
