WeEn Semiconductors has launched the WMSC family of AC-DC and DC-DC silicon carbide (SiC) power modules for solid-state transformers (SSTs), EV chargers, smart grid and renewable energy applications. More than 20 modules were developed for the launch. Voltage ratings range from 1,200 to 2,300 V and RDS(on) values go as low as 1.5 mΩ.
For grid-side power factor correction (PFC) in AI racks, WeEn says the modules handle conversion from 35 kV AC to 800 V DC in a single stage. Three-level topology parts such as the 1,700 V, 5.0 mΩ WMSC5R0N17B3T are intended to improve EMI performance, while two-level devices such as the 2,300 V WMSC5R0F23B3T give easier control and smaller footprints, according to WeEn. A three-level leg switches half the DC bus voltage across each device, which lowers dv/dt and the filtering burden, at the cost of more devices and a more complex gate drive.
On the DC-DC side, half-bridge modules for the primary and secondary of LLC and dual-active-bridge (DAB) converters come in B2, B3 and 62 mm screw-mount housings. The multi-purpose B3 parts run from the 2,300 V WMSC5R0HS23B3T for the AC side down to 1,200 V secondary-side devices such as the WMSC2R4F12B3T. In the 62 mm screw-mount package, WeEn lists the 2.7 mΩ, 1,700 V WMSC2R7H17T2N-D for LLC and DAB primary duty and the 7.5 mΩ, 1,700 V WMSC7R5H17T2N-D for the secondary. The lowest on-resistance part in the family is the 1.5 mΩ, 1,200 V WMSC1R5H12B3S, a PCB-mount half-bridge for secondary-side use.

WeEn says all of the modules offer low inductance, and that the pin order leaves room for the gate drive circuit while accounting for device integration and electrical safety. Options cover the direct bonded copper, case and silicon-gel materials, as well as the mount, pin type, plating and pre-applied thermal interface material, through the company’s custom design team. Customer-specific configurations can also be created.
SSTs offer conversion efficiencies in the region of 98%, according to WeEn. All of the modules are available for sampling and in production quantities.
Kevin Shen, President of WeEn Semiconductors, said the new modules cover roughly 90% of all SST applications and are also suited to smart grid, renewable and other high-voltage systems. “They offer higher switching speeds and higher breakdown voltages, which in turn allows for direct connection to the medium-voltage grid as well as reduced magnetics, higher efficiencies and simplified cooling.”
