Amprius boosts global production footprint of SiCore cells with new South Korean partner

Amprius Technologies, a manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries incorporating silicon anode technology, has announced a contract manufacturing agreement with a battery manufacturer located in South Korea, with an eye towards increasing output of its SiCore cell.

SiCore cells use a silicon anode material system to enable high charge availability and power performance in one cell. SiCore cells offer “unparalleled power-to-energy capabilities for high-demand applications” that require both endurance and rapid energy delivery, the company said. Possible applications include electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, drones and high-performance electric vehicles.

“This strategic partnership expands Amprius’s global production footprint and enhances its ability to deliver high-performance SiCore cells at scale to meet rising global demand,” the company said. It is also part of the company’s capital-light production scaling strategy, according to CEO Dr. Kang Sun.

The South Korean partner, which was not identified in the announcement, has extensive experience in manufacturing advanced lithium-ion batteries in a range of form factors and cell chemistries, Amprius said.

Initial production in South Korea will include a balanced SiCore cell engineered to deliver high-energy and high-power performance for an advanced drone.
